Description:

The demand for clean energy and energy efficiency products, services, and solutions is rising rapidly in multiple international markets, presenting opportunities for New England companies competing in the clean energy space.

Join us on Thursday, June 28, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 am at the offices of MOITI as we welcome Ken Brown, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment (MOITI), and Jim Cabot from Rasky Baerlein Strategic Commincations.

This event will benefit clean energy and energy efficiency companies and entrepreneurs wishing to sell and market their services in other countries, and will address:

  • How clean energy and energy efficiency companies can leverage the demand in international markets to expand their sales. 
  • How MOITI can help companies connect to international markets. 
  • How clean energy companies can connect with decision makers and government officials in international markets.

Panelist Bios:

Ken Brown, Executive Director, MOITI

Ken Brown heads up MOITI, and is responsible for helping to strengthen the Commonwealth's standing in today's global economy. An attorney and former special assistant in the United States Department of Commerce where he assisted with international trade missions to the Middle East, Africa, South America and Europe, most recently served as Governor Patrick's senior advisor on special projects. He planned and executed Massachusetts' Innovation Economy Partnership Mission to Israel and the United Kingdom, and was in charge of the Governor's 2007 trade mission to China, his 2009 mission to Silicon Valley, California and his work at the global BIO International Conventions, including the 2007 Boston meeting where the Governor unveiled the $1 billion landmark Life Sciences Initiative.  


Jim Cabot, Senior Vice President

Jim Cabot manages Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications' energy, environment and emerging technology practice, working closely with large and small companies across the energy, clean-tech and emerging technology industries. He oversees integrated communications programs including media relations, public affairs, project management and regulatory strategy.

 

Jim spent 12 years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), New England, serving most recently as director of strategic planning, managing the launch of new strategic planning, program evaluation, and accountability systems. His tenure at the EPA also included serving as Director and Founder of EPA's first environmental technology development and commercialization center, which provided business consulting, and secured technology grants and funding for private sector companies from clean-tech startups to Fortune 100 companies. His previous experience encompasses financial services, national political campaigns and work in the nonprofit sector.

 

Dr. Ory Zik, Founder, CEO, Energy Points, Inc.

 

Prior to founding Energy Points Inc., Dr. Zik was the founding CEO of HelioFocus where he currently serves on the board of directors. The company develops solar thermal augmentation for conventional power plants. In Jan 2010 he raised the first equity investment of a Chinese company in an Israeli startup and stepped down as CEO to focus on building an intuitive sustainability metric. HelioFocus is now growing in the US, Israel and China. Prior to HelioFocus he was the founding CEO of Quantomix Inc, a microscopy company based on his invention, which he led from inception in 2001 to commercialization. QuantomiX was the first to visualize cells and tissues in their native wet state with an electron microscope. In 1992, he spent a year as the curator of Israel’s National Museum of Science and in 1993, while a Ph.D. student, he founded Greenpeace Israel.

Dr. Zik Holds B.Sc. (cum laude) in Physics and Mathematics from Tel Aviv University as well as M.Sc. (cum laude) and Ph.D. in Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he received the Feinberg physics award and the national Amos De Shalit physics prize. He holds worldwide patents and has extensive experience in founding startups based on university innovations (Weizmann Institute, Stanford, Harvard, Boston University, Purdue). Currently, Dr. Zik is an MIT research affiliate. He is also active in education, coaching first-time entrepreneurs and environmental protection.

Michelle Ouellette, Senior International Trade Specialist, Massachusetts U.S. Export Assistance Center

Michelle Ouellette is a Senior International Trade Specialist with the U.S Commerical Service at the U.S Export Assistance Center in Boston. With over 23 years of international trade development, sales, and marketing experience with public and private sector organizations, she currently serves on the Global Health Technologies and Energy Sector Teams for Commercial Service.

Michelle was formerly the Business Development Director for Sky-Skan Inc. in Nashua; Deputy Director for the State of New Hampshire's Office of International Commerce and International Trade Resource Center; and Market Research Manager for Curtis and NUBY Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Jaffrey, NH. She is also a past President of the NH International Trade Associationand has served on several boards. Michelle has a BS from Springfield College, a MBA from the University of Harftford, and a Paralegal Certificate from the University of New Hampshire. She is also a NASBITE International Certified Global Business Professional. 

Moneer Azzam, CEO, Founder, SolarOne Solutions, Inc.

Moneer Azzam is founder and CEO of SolarOne® Solutions, a venture-backed firm providing solar powered solutions across the globe with a focus on commercial scale LED-based lighting.  Mr. Azzam has over 24 years of experience in the photovoltaic industry and 8 years in solid state lighting. He has three issued and three pending patents.  Mr. Azzam founded, directed and/or served on the board of numerous organizations related to the deployment of solar powered systems including the IEC, the United Nations Energy Access for All Practitioners Network and Consortium for Solar Lighting.  Mr. Azzam has published and presented several papers on solar lighting, photovoltaic markets and product development.  He has also worked in the nuclear power and defense industries.  Moneer is a graduate of Tufts University with post-graduate work at University of Pittsburgh and Northeastern University.

Horacio Caperan, Managing Director, Fusionview, LLC

Horacio is the founder and managing director of Fusionview LLC, a consultancy focused on international business development, marketing and government affairs, specializing in convergence for cleantech and life sciences industries. His professional experience includes UniLever, Ernst & Young, Interpublic Group (Futurebrand), Adventis Corporation, and Hammond Hill, as well as clients, large and small, from North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Asia. Presently, Horacio works with clean energy ventures (e.g. wind, solar, biofuels, electric vehicles) helping them identify and engage international opportunities, and he is also the representative in Boston, for Massachusetts, of BioWin (the Health Cluster of Wallonia, Belgium).  Horacio is also known for having represented InvestChile from 2006 through 2010.  Horacio focuses on shaping technological and commercial partnerships with innovation players from Massachusetts, the broadest USA and international markets.

Horacio earned an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, a dual M.Sc. in Biology and Biotechnology from Tufts University and he is also a Fellow from the Leading Clean Energy Ventures program (Boston University and New England Clean Energy Council). A US citizen, Horacio is originally from Chile and lives with his wife and two daughters in Winchester, Massachusetts.

The New England Clean Energy Council’s mission is to accelerate New England’s clean energy economy to global leadership by building an active community of stakeholders and a world-class cluster of clean energy companies.

The New England Clean Energy Council (NECEC, a 501(c)(6) trade member organization) is the lead voice for hundreds of clean energy companies across New England, influencing the energy policy agenda and growing the clean energy economy.  The NECEC Institute (a 501(c)(3)) is a leader in programs that support Innovation, Cluster Research & Economic Development, and Education & Workforce Development.
